Slow Games

Last month I was reintroduced to the concept of Wargames, Megagames and non-traditional larp experiences by this excellent video by People Make Games. And it has gotten me thinking about larger scale but slower paced game formats.

Watching that video got me very inspired by the idea of creating a war game that plays out over a significant period of time, weeks or months. Ironically this also reminded me of a video by People Make Games on a similar concept developed by Halfbrick. Anyway, the idea was a global map all players are engaged in, a space combat scenario was my first thought, but every player only inputs their moves at set intervals, then the GM would update the map and get players responses, etc.

This seems fine enough but without a form of roleplay is a bit weak in my opinion and needs more tinkering, encouraging the players to interact with eachother outside those set periods where the map updates, I've yet to figure that out, how to incorporate the personal with the macro game.

Anyway anyway, I've found a real drought of content in this area, either I'm just not searching the right things or there really are no people working on this concept, and I find it so engaging! A big group all joined together and checking in every day, chatting about the events and updates for the global game, making it feel like a capital E Event that a group of people are all invested in.

All this to say, I'm working on *something* in regards to this, I would really like to bring it to fruition, but also I'm scouring the web for any inkling that it might exist already to help give me ideas or inspiration.

See you next time.
